Mixed martial arts (MMA) represents a dynamic full-contact combat sport that integrates striking, grappling, and ground fighting techniques sourced from various martial arts disciplines worldwide. The term “mixed martial arts” gained prominence in 1993, notably used by television critic Howard Rosenberg in his review of UFC 1.

The roots of modern MMA can be traced back to the early 20th century, marked by interstylistic contests across Japan and East Asia. Concurrently in Brazil, the phenomenon of vale tudo emerged, characterized by unrestricted bouts encompassing diverse styles such as judo/Brazilian jiu-jitsu, catch wrestling/luta livre, Muay Thai, and capoeira. Another precursor was the 1976 exhibition match between boxer Muhammad Ali and wrestler Antonio Inoki in Japan, leading to the establishment of organizations like Shooto (1985), Pancrase (1993), and Pride Fighting Championships (1997).

In the 1990s, the Gracie family introduced their Brazilian jiu-jitsu style, developed since the 1920s, to the United States, laying the groundwork for the creation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 1993. The early UFC events featured minimal rules, reflecting the influence of figures like Art Davie and Rorion Gracie, aiming to replicate the raw intensity of vale tudo fights in Brazil. Subsequent adjustments to the rule set, such as the prohibition of certain techniques like kicking a grounded opponent, distinguished UFC from other leagues, which leaned towards more realistic, street-like combat scenarios.
