Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), known as jiu-jitsu brasileiro in Portuguese, stands as both a martial art for self-defense and a competitive combat sport, emphasizing grappling, ground fighting, and submission techniques. At its core, BJJ focuses on bringing an opponent to the ground, establishing dominance, and utilizing various methods to compel submission through joint locks or chokeholds.

Originating in 1925, Brazilian jiu-jitsu owes its creation to the Gracie family, particularly brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., and Hélio Gracie. The genesis of BJJ can be traced back to Carlos’s encounter with Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka, who imparted a blend of traditional Japanese Jujitsu and Kodokan judo in 1917. Subsequently, the Gracie family refined these teachings into their own self-defense system, famously known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Over time, BJJ evolved into a distinct combat sport, drawing from the innovations of Gracie jiu-jitsu and judo techniques. It gained prominence as a fundamental martial art within modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitions.
